In nearby Rio Rancho–one of the more conservative-leaning cities in Northern New Mexico–Democrat Barbara Jordan is seeking the office of mayor.
Roswell is much farther afield from Bernalillo geographically, but its mayoral election, pitting Tim Jennings against Republican incumbent Dennis Kintigh bears attention. Jennings is one of the longest-serving and more conservative Democratic leaders in the state legislature, and lost his seat to Republican Cliff Pirtle in 2012 after serving 34 years. Republican Kintigh, a former state representative, is seeking his third 4-year term in the Chaves County city of almost 49,000 people.
The State Democratic Convention is set in Roswell, March 5.
