Message from the Chair

DPBC chair Flora Lucero addressed those gathered for the virtual New Mexico Legislative Expo on Saturday, January 9, 2021 just days after the January 6 assault on Congress, incited by the current president. The president’s role in that assault has triggered introduction of a resolution of impeachment. Flora’s remarks to the 350 people who attended are reproduced here as her monthly comment:

This event has obviously answered a call.

We have witnessed what happens when we put our democracy on autopilot and leave activism up to those with selfish motives.

The last four years and especially the last four days have shown us that we have work to do. Our weaknesses were on full display as we watched an autocratic leader attempt to bring our nation to its knees.

Let us not soon forget. Instead, may it remain as fuel for strengthening our democracy against tyrannical forces that were and are born within our borders and elevated as a coveted ideal.

We have work to do. And that work embraces commitment to a democracy of, by, and for the people. Today we practice democracy that is committed to We the People.

Thank you for being here. Thank you for bringing yourself to this work.

I am proud to serve you and work beside you.

I am Flora Lucero, Chair of the Democratic Party of Bernalillo County. Serving you alongside Manny Crespin and Cheryl Harris, our Vice Chairs, and alongside chairs and vice chairs of 32 other County Parties across our state.

Together we are building a bridge to a more inclusive truly representative democracy.
