Attention, Westsiders and others: Now’s the time to get to work with Dan Ohiri. He and his team of volunteers are mobilizing voters in Albuquerque’s western neighborhoods as far north as Corrales where it hits the county line, as far south as Dennis Chavez and Pajarito, and as far west as Ventana Ranch, Taylor Ranch, and the Petroglyphs.
Dan’s widespread turf is home to many older/retired residents and also working professionals with families – some new to Albuquerque and some in place since the first developments arose 20 years ago. The Westside trends Democratic, but among the newcomers are voters who have registered as Independents, and there is a conservative streak that has been historically revealed in conservative coalitions.
Dan and his teams are working to get out the vote for Democratic candidates, from Joe Biden to NM legislators to local judges down the ballot. He and two organizing helpers run phone banking, virtual community roundtables, Reach and text bank trainings – a variety of outreach efforts ongoing every week, throughout the week. For his volunteers, it all adds up to multiple and meaningful opportunities to contact voters on the Westside and even across the state.
A self-described “political junkie,” Ohiri got hooked when his mom took him door knocking for the first time in 2004 for John Kerry. He further explains: “Politics is very personal to me because my family and my friends are directly affected by the decisions of policy makers. I got involved in this election because I desperately don’t want to have Trump in the White House for another 4 years. I truly believe that the fate of the republic will be determined by the outcome of this election.”
Dan reports that a stalwart group of around 40 volunteers – anywhere in age from their 20s to their 80s – are showing up to work with him twice a week on a regular basis. He has room for and hopes to add at least ten more in the next few weeks leading up to the election.
