Democrats looking at ways to channel their anger and frustration over how our democracy is being corrupted should consider joining a caucus.
The State Party has 12 areas of focus, from labor to the environment and from veterans to the LGBTQ+ community. Each is designed to help like-minded members define objectives, hold events and meetings, propose legislation, and gain community support.
For example, Frank Smith, chair of the Veterans Caucus, lists advocating for legislation that supports veterans’ health, housing, education, and transition from military to civilian life among his group’s goals. He cited success in supporting property tax exemptions for veterans in the 2024 legislative session and backing Senate Bill 16, which allows voters to participate in primary elections even if they did not indicate a party preference when they registered to vote. He says the goal was to encourage broader civic engagement among veterans, since about half nationwide register as decline-to-state or independents.
Young Democrats of New Mexico is another caucus with goals that include increased participation in the political world. Chair Marcos Balido says his coalition is devoted to mobilizing youth and fostering voter readiness. These and other activities, he says, are aimed at developing leaders while educating younger voters about the Party.
“We actively engage in canvassing and phone banking, and we are committed to organizing events that support the election of Democratic candidates in the upcoming election seasons. My executive team and I see the caucus as a way to provide opportunities for both current and prospective members to become involved in our political process,” he said.
The Young Democrats will soon host training sessions on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, to show caucus members how they can assist people who need to enroll in this vital program.
The wide range of areas covered by the caucus program means that — while most are active — some lack leadership. For Democrats interested in the subject or group, that should not be a hindrance. Like any organic structure, the framework is there but needs a spark to bring it to life.
