Hello, Albuquerque!
My name is Byron Powdrell, and I’m proud to announce my candidacy for City Council District 9. For those who don’t know me yet, I’m a lifelong Albuquerque resident, a community advocate, a father, and someone who deeply loves this city and the people who call it home.
I’m running because Albuquerque is facing some of its toughest challenges, and it’s time for leadership that’s willing to roll up its sleeves and get to work. Youth crime is on the rise, our unsheltered population continues to grow, and the trust between our neighborhoods and leadership feels stretched thin. These aren’t part-time issues, and City Council isn’t a part-time job. This is hands-on work, and I’m a hands-on person. You’ll see me in our schools, at our community meetings, and out in the streets of District 9—not sitting behind a desk. I believe in being present, listening, and taking action.
For nearly two years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with the Albuquerque Police Department in Community Engagement, alongside ACS and Bernalillo County, on the Summer of Non-Violence initiative. This experience has only reinforced my belief in the power of community partnerships and proactive solutions. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made, and I know we can do even more with a focused, united effort.
As a proud father, I’m especially invested in Albuquerque’s future because my children go to school here. I see what they and their peers are going through every day—the opportunities they have, and the obstacles they face. It’s crucial that we create pathways to success for our youth that keep them out of trouble, give them hope for brighter futures, and equip them with the skills they need to succeed. That includes ensuring more access to trades programs and vocational training, so our young people can have solid careers and financial independence.
On the issue of unsheltered individuals, I know we can do better. Housing is a human need, and no one should have to sleep on the streets. But addressing homelessness requires more than temporary solutions. It takes compassion, resources, and practical steps to connect people to the help they need while keeping our communities safe and thriving.
I want to remind everyone that City Council is a nonpartisan election. I have friends on both sides of the political spectrum because, at the end of the day, the issues we face as a city transcend political labels. This campaign is about solving problems and putting Albuquerque first. I’m ready for the personal attacks. I’ve run before, and when those attacks happen, it’s because they’ve forgotten about you—the citizens of Albuquerque. My focus will remain on you and the issues that matter most to our city. I will not be distracted by negativity; my priority is delivering solutions for our neighborhoods.
Recently, I was honored to receive an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities for my community work and advocacy. This recognition is a reflection of the passion I have for Albuquerque and my unwavering commitment to making a meaningful impact. It’s a reminder that when we come together as a community, we can achieve great things.
If you know me, you know I’m not the type to sit on the sidelines. I’m ready to listen, learn, and work with every one of you to tackle these challenges head-on. This campaign isn’t about me—it’s about us. Together, we can build an Albuquerque where families feel safe, children have opportunities, and every neighborhood can thrive.
Let’s get to work, District 9.
Thank you,
Byron Powdrell
