2025 is More Important Than You Think: “The Off-Year Mirage”

These new leaders are ready to roll up their sleeves, hit the ground running, and deliver for Democrats at every level. (418 words, 2 mins)

Hello Bernalillo County Dems,

Over the past few weeks, serving as your Chair, I’ve felt deeply inspired. Seeing so many of you ready to roll up your sleeves and get to work has given me so much hope—and it’s pushed me to dream even bigger for what we can accomplish together. We’re not just preparing to win big in 2025 and 2026—we’re building a year-round, community-rooted party that makes DPBC a true beacon of leadership, service, and Democratic values.

Through Advocacy, Service, Accountability, and People Power, we are redefining what it means to be a Democrat—and that work is happening right now.

Even as we make progress revitalizing our internal structure and growing our grassroots presence, we can’t forget our core mission: electing good Democrats to every office we can.

There’s a narrative I’ve heard from some national figures lately—that 2025 is an “off-year.” To that, I say: Really?

Tell that to our Ward and Precinct Chairs holding monthly meetings with their neighbors.

Tell that to our organizers planning rallies, voter outreach, and community events.

Tell that to the newly elected party leaders across our state who are hitting the ground running.

This year is not “off”—it’s foundational.

Right now, mayoral and city council candidates are in one of the most critical phases of their campaigns. They’re putting in the work for two major reasons:

  • To qualify for the ballot, candidates must collect a required number of valid signatures from registered voters.
  • To qualify for public financing, candidates must meet a threshold of $5 donations from community members.

If you want to elect strong Democrats to local office—now is the time to act.

Use the links below to sign their nominating petitions and contribute to their campaigns. (Remember: as a registered voter, you can only sign one nominating petition for each office, but you can contribute $5 to as many candidates as you’d like.)

One thing I’ve learned in this role: real change starts at the local level. While these municipal races are technically “nonpartisan,” our values are on the ballot—and we’ll work hard to make sure Democrats who reflect those values win.

Not sure who the best Democratic candidates are in your area? Stay tuned—DPBC will soon announce candidate forums for contested races, so you can hear directly from those running and make informed decisions.

Republicans are counting on us to stay home. They want low turnout in municipal elections.
Let’s show them who we are and what we can do together.

We know that city councils, school boards, and mayoral offices are where critical decisions get made—on housing, public safety, climate action, infrastructure, and economic development. These are the leaders who shape our daily lives and the future of our communities.

If we sit this out, we lose ground. But if we show up early, organize smartly, and get our neighbors involved—we win. That’s how we build momentum going into 2026 and beyond. That’s how we set the tone for what our party and our values stand for.

Let’s show New Mexico and the entire nation what Democratic people power really looks like when it’s grounded in community and focused on results.

Onward together,

Jacob Trujillo
Chair, Democratic Party of Bernalillo County
