We, the People

“Ultimately, America’s answer to the intolerant man is diversity.”—Robert Kennedy

You may well know by now that the most infamous “leader” of the free world is coming to the Santa Ana Star Center on the evening of Monday, September 16. Within minutes of hearing the news, people were organizing. Our gut reaction was to come together and stand united not against him but for the values we embrace.

New Mexicans are the antithesis of the message that divides people and creates a hierarchy based on skin color, gender, or economic status. We are diverse and we love our diversity. We are strong and we love our strength. We are humane and we love our humanitarian ways. The message of hate has no place in our community and when we say “we, the people,” we know that phrase includes all of us.

The rallies and actions being planned in response to the visit are wide ranging. There will be something for everyone. There will be a pledge-athon for people to give to local organizations doing good work in areas such as defending immigrant rights. There will be rallies with Democratic elected officials and rallies with entertainment and local non-profits. There will be a plethora of ways to take a stand for our values: none better, none worse; all are equally beneficial for expressing unity.

Our answer to the intolerant man is diversity. We live it and as New Mexican Democrats, we proudly embrace it.

Yours in democracy,
