The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. The Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution
The strain from this election has been immense. Watching groundwork being laid to overthrow this election has tested my faith in the strength of the pillars of our democracy. Over the last two weeks, I have read and reread, watched, and listened to experts’ opinions on voting laws in key states where certification of their votes has been challenged. I am extremely grateful that the protection of the vote has been written into law and precedent has been set to protect our vote. With the certification of Michigan’s votes, we are one step closer to ensuring Trump and his team will not thwart the will of the people. Thankfully, the tenets of our democracy are prevailing.
We are nearing a turning point on this long and winding road. A record number of people voted in this election. Thousands upon thousands of people put time, effort, and countless resources into helping the Biden Harris ticket win. Yet we, with Biden and Harris, are in this struggle for the heart of our nation. We have lessons to learn from the last four years and we must critically examine the outcomes of this election. With that in mind, the Democratic Party of Bernalillo County is debriefing our local election on Dec. 5 and you are invited to join the conversation. With each step in the transition from Trump to Biden, a little more anxiety releases from my nervous system. Four years ago, I moved the placement of my news app from my phone’s home screen because I could not bear the thought of seeing Donald Trump’s face every day. I am now beginning to allow myself to anticipate the relief I will feel when his likeness and persona no longer seep into the corners of my life. Soon we will have his administration in our rearview mirror. What a relief that will be.
Wishing you a safe and peaceful Thanksgiving,
Flora Lucero, Chair
