Strengths-based Democracy

If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope. ― Barack Obama
We each have our own unique strengths. Your strengths are welcome and wanted for this work. This work of building our local Democratic Party not only prepares us for 2020, it allows us to contribute to the structure of our democracy in real and meaningful ways. Where do you fit in? What do you bring to the table? How do you fit in? Answering where you fit in is rather easy.
You fit in right where you are. You live in a precinct which is part of a ward, or cluster of precincts. Your ward is part of the Democratic Party of Bernalillo County (DPBC) structure and DPBC nests within the Democratic Party of New Mexico (DPNM). You fit in right where you are, in your precinct, ward, DPBC, and DPNM. What you bring to the table is a question you are best qualified to answer.
What you bring to the table are your own strengths and skills. Some skills are specialized. Some of you have facilitation skills. Others of you are great with technology. Some of you know how to gather people together and create space for dialogue and community building. Some provide simple, wonderful support by helping with set up or clean up. Phone calls, data entry, scheduling, photography, and social media are just a few of the many and varied tasks that create more robust connections between us. Whatever your strengths and skills, they are welcome in this party-building work. How do your strengths get used in this work? That is a matter of attitude.
This work of building the Democratic Party is volunteer led and powered. That is both beautiful and beautifully imperfect. Giving our skills, time, and effort to create something new requires flexibility. There is an element of uncertainty and yet, if we bring our strengths to the table and willingly give them to create something greater where we are, we will make good things happen, fill the world with hope, and fill ourselves with hope.
I am honored and grateful to work alongside you on this journey. We are building the bridge to a more inclusive representative democracy while we are crossing it.
Yours truly,
Flora Lucero
Chair, Democratic Party of Bernalillo County
