At 10 PM local time last night we officially reached the halfway point in the national disaster known as the “Trump Presidency”. The nightmare is now more than half over. Technically, however, we’re only in the second half of Trump’s first term, and he barely even waited for the smoke coming from the Bible that he was sworn in on to dissipate before announcing that he would seek a second term.
Current polling suggests that he would lose to just about any Democratic candidate running against him, but that’s the current polling. That could change if he can rally his base with his efforts to convince a large enough segment of the voting public that the shutdown that he was so proud to force is actually the fault of the Democrats, which is exactly what he’s been trying to do for the past month.
There is little doubt that when we get to November of 2020, New Mexico’s five electoral votes will go to the Democratic candidate. But one of Trump’s staunchest supporters, former Congressman Steve Pearce, is now Chairman of the Republican Party of New Mexico. Rest assured that he will be pulling out all of the stops, and using all of the dirty tricks that he’s practiced over the years, to deliver New Mexico for Donald Trump in 2020. It may be an unthinkable scenario to most of us, but it’s not an impossibility.
If projections for the Electoral College vote turn out to be close, New Mexico will be one of the battlegrounds. With roughly one third of the votes in New Mexico coming out of Bernalillo County, our county may well be “ground zero” for the 2020 presidential election. Party leaders at the state and county level can only do so much to keep New Mexico in the “blue” column. We need a strong party structure at the ward and precinct level to ensure a win in 2020, as well as to flip the last two remaining Republican-held Bernalillo County seats in the NM House, protect the 23 seats in that body that we now have and flip the six Bernco seats that Republicans still hold in the NM Senate.
We have ward and precinct elections coming up on March 23rd. Those elections will be “the first shot fired” in the 2020 battle. Please be involved! And get your friends, neighbors and relatives involved. Especially the millennials and young Generation Z voters. Leadership alone won’t win elections. We need volunteers from every age group, but we especially need the younger voters.
Let’s keep working together!
Chair, Democratic Party of Bernalillo County
