Friday night Donald Trump caved and signed the funding bill that temporarily ended the Great Trump Shutdown that he forced on America because Democrats held firm and refused to write him a check for $5.7 billion to start work on building the Great Wall of Trump along our southern border. Remember, the total cost was estimated to eventually climb to over $75 billion before Trump’s “big, beautiful wall” was completed. The $5.7 billion that he was demanding was just to get the work started.
So, on Friday night Trump gave in and signed the bill that authorized paychecks for our federal workers, reopening critical agencies that had been closed, or running on skeleton crews, for over a month. But he promised to fight on, declaring that there could be another shutdown in three weeks, or he could declare a “national emergency” that would allow him to divert funds from useful areas of government to start building his wall. Less than 36 hours later he started beating his drum again in a series of Sunday morning tweets.
He tweeted there were “at least 25,772,342” illegal immigrants living in the U.S. and that in just the first four weeks of the year those (precisely 25,772,342) immigrants had cost American taxpayers exactly $18,959,495,168. Surprisingly, he rounded to the nearest dollar instead of providing numbers to the penny.
Anybody who, in the real world, actually deals with such large numbers will always round them off, so the very fact that he was so precise is a pretty clear indication that Trump was just typing in digits, made up out of thin air, rather than doing any real research. But Trump’s loyal base will eat those fabricated statistics up and will likely quote them incessantly. This poor excuse for a President, and those who support him without question, will not go quietly into the night. Don’t become overly confident or complacent just because of the Blue Wave that we created in New Mexico in 2018. 2020 won’t be a cakewalk.
With Trump’s buddy, Steve Pearce, presiding as New Mexico’s GOP Chairman, we have our work cut out for us. We need for every Democrat to be on board, as a ward chair, precinct chair, block captain or volunteer, and actively engaged to combat the fake numbers and “alternative facts” of this fake President.
Let’s keep working together!
