“…This is accelerated by social media…That is not activism, that is not bringing about change. If all you’re doing is casting stones, you are probably not going to get that far.”
— President Barack Obama
In a recent event hosted by the Obama Foundation, former President Barack Obama talked about this messy world we live in and the fact that “people who do really good stuff have flaws.” Looking out at the many good people we have working in the Democratic Party and many of the elected officials serving residents of Bernalillo County, I’m humbled by the people who don’t just sit back and throw stones, they are in the fight for our democracy in very real and tangible ways. Beautifully imperfect people from every walk of life are giving their time, effort, and talents to this work because to some of us, “Democrat” isn’t just a label; it’s a way of life.
Democratic values do not make their appearance during campaigns or at the ballot box and then get tucked away the rest of the year. s stated in the (pg. 2), are centered on equity. Those values drive us to knock on doors and make phone calls to let voters know about candidates who we believe will represent us on issues that matter to us. And those values also drive us to follow through when our candidates are elected; we support them as they work on our behalf and let them know our views about policies under their influence.
On Thursday, November 21, the DPBC Third Thursday will feature Dede Feldman, former member of the New Mexico Senate and author of Another Way Forward: Grassroots Solutions from New Mexico. Senator Feldman will present a very relevant, practical how-to a citizen lobbyist on issues you care about and how issues and legislation work their way through the legislative process. Mark your calendars and plan to attend this informative program.
