And Then There Are the Rest of Us

By Flora Lucero

How can you be so obtuse?
–Andy Dufresne, “The Shawshank Redemption”

Over the last four years we have watched Donald Trump’s corrupt nature competing for center stage with willful ignorance and flagrant disregard for the highest public office in the United States of America. Today our nation faces historical challenges, yet we lack leadership at a national level that mobilizes the masses to work cooperatively toward a better tomorrow. Those who follow Donald Trump, no matter how obtuse his behavior, are relatively few but they do exist. And then there are the many; yes, and then there are the rest of us.

The rest of us are a mosaic of color and we embrace that diversity as greatness. We value facts and we calculate the health of our nation not by the dollars flowing through our economy but by the strength, health, and wellbeing of all people regardless of skin color, sexual orientation, geographic location, national origin, economic status, or age. We respect the office and responsibility of the President as an obligation to serve rather than an opportunity for plunder. And most importantly, we understand the significance of the 2020 General Election as our time to work at restoring dignity and a semblance of order and thoughtfulness to the Presidency of the United States of America.

I am proud to serve alongside you at this pivotal time of our lives as we continually hone our own beliefs in social equity, act on that conviction, and work to elect people who embrace our values. We are truly building the bridge to the democracy we desire while crossing it.

With determination and appreciation,
Flora Lucero, Chair
Democratic Party of Bernalillo County
